Uriah Heep accuses Annie Strong of infidelity

David Copperfield

Uriah Heep accuses Annie Strong of infidelity in a confrontation with Doctor Strong, turning earlier private suspicions into public pressure. By presenting innuendo as common knowledge and forcing Mr. Wickfield to acknowledge what he once suspected, Heep makes the accusation itself an instrument of humiliation and control; the scene establishes suspicion, not proof of misconduct.

Background and Setup

Doctor Strong is distressed, and David Copperfield approaches him with words of comfort. Heep then insists that he has already called the Doctor’s attention to what he terms Annie’s conduct. His officious manner and repeated claim that everyone is entangled in an unpleasant matter frame the intervention as reluctant duty, while making clear that he intends to force the subject into the open.

The Accusation

Heep alleges that Annie Strong and Jack Maldon are too intimate. He claims that their supposed attachment was apparent before Maldon left for India, that Maldon returned for no other reason, and that his continued presence has the same explanation. These are Heep’s assertions, presented as obvious to everyone; the scene supplies no independent confirmation that Annie has been unfaithful.

Wickfield’s Admission

Heep presses Mr. Wickfield to say whether he had long shared the suspicion. Wickfield acknowledges that he had doubted Annie and questioned whether she was fulfilling her duty to Doctor Strong. He also admits that he had been uneasy about Agnes’s close association with Annie because of what he thought he saw, or imagined he saw. He says he had never intended these doubts to become known and describes confessing them as painful. His admission confirms the existence and effects of his suspicion, not the truth of Heep’s allegation.

David and the Scene’s Stakes

After Mr. Wickfield’s confession, Heep adds that David Copperfield had noticed the supposed intimacy too. David turns on him and demands to know how he dares invoke his name. Heep answers that David understood the insinuation when Heep had spoken to him earlier and urges him not to deny it. The accusation thus expands from an allegation about Annie into an attempt to enlist David as corroboration, while exposing Heep’s method: he turns ambiguous impressions and private misgivings into leverage over those present.
